Menstrual Disorders and Abnormal Bleeding

Everyone has their own menstrual schedule. Cycle dates, period flows, and PMS differs from person to person. But some differences are not normal and healthy. 

Abnormal bleeding and irregular periods indicate that there is something not right in your reproductive system. You could have a menstrual disorder. These signs shouldn’t be ignored but looked into.

Heavy Flow

One of the most common menstrual disorders is menorrhagia. If you have extremely heavy bleeding that lasts for more than 7 days, there is a chance you could have this disorder.

Painful Flow

In primary dysmenorrhea, women have painful uterine contractions because of hormonal imbalance. If you have medical conditions which cause pain, that is secondary. 

This can happen because of polyps and inflammation in the pelvis, fibroids, and pregnancy complications. If you started your period at an earlier age, you have a risk of having this menstrual disorder. Obesity, alcoholism, and narcotics addiction trigger this disorder.

If you have extremely painful cramps to the point, you can’t function properly, you could have dysmenorrhea. Headache, nausea, painful contractions, lower body pain, vomiting are all symptoms of dysmenorrhea.

Absence of Period

Did you know there is a menstrual disorder called Amenorrhea? Generally, girls over 16 who reached puberty but never got their first period get diagnosed with this disorder (primary amenorrhea). 

If you have missed your period for more than three months and you’re not pregnant, there is a chance of the secondary type. This can happen because of excessive stress, weight gain, issues with ovulation, thyroid disorder, medical conditions or genetics. Treatment options include hormone therapy, birth control medicine and, in extreme cases, surgery.

PMS

Another common menstrual disorder is PMS or Premenstrual symptoms. This starts on days leading up to period. It can cause extreme nausea, bloating, cramps, swollen sensitive breasts, irritable mood and more. Read more on PMS to know preventive actions.

General treatments for menstrual disorders include painkillers, contraception, hormone supplements, antidepressants, and even surgery.
