HPV: Prevention and Vaccination

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection that affects both men and women. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection globally. In this blog, we will learn how to prevent HPV and the importance of vaccination from Prof. Dr. Kishwar Sultana.

The best way to prevent HPV is by practicing safe sex. Use condoms every time you have sexual intercourse. Limiting your number of sexual partners can also reduce your risk of HPV. It is important to have open and honest conversations with your partner about sexual health before engaging in sexual activity.

In addition to safe sex practices, getting regular Pap tests is also important for early detection of HPV. Women should start getting Pap tests at age 21 and continue every 3 years until age 65.

Vaccination:
The HPV vaccine is recommended for both males and females aged 9 to 45. The vaccine is most effective when given to individuals before they become sexually active. The vaccine is given in a series of shots, usually 2 or 3 doses over a period of several months.

The HPV vaccine protects against the types of HPV that are most likely to cause cancer, including cervical cancer, anal cancer, and throat cancer. The vaccine can also prevent genital warts.

In Bangladesh, the HPV vaccine was first introduced in 2016 and is currently available for girls aged from 9. Even though it is currently only available through private healthcare providers, the government of Bangladesh is working to increase access to the vaccine and to make it available for free. 

HPV is a serious infection that can lead to life-threatening health problems. Prevention is key, and the best way to protect yourself is to get vaccinated. In addition to vaccination, practicing safe sex and regular check-ups with your healthcare provider can help lower your risk.
