Birth Control and Risk Factors
Have you ever used birth control pills? Did you face any side effects?
Birth control pills are one of the most effective contraceptives to exist. They can prevent pregnancy 99% of the time.
However, there are certain risks attached to it. Other than unexpected pregnancy, birth control pills have some side effects. It’s important to note here that most of these go away unnoticed. Extreme danger happens in rare cases. But there is still a chance for these risks to show up.
Can’t miss a dose
Firstly, while it’s an effective contraceptive, there is still a chance that you may become pregnant. You need to take these pills daily and at the same time every day for perfect results. Missing one dose can compromise your situation.
Weight restrictive
Many women are unaware that birth control pills work for women who are below 90kgs. Plus, if you throw up or have diarrhea, your pill might exist in your body. This is a quite common reason why women became pregnant despite taking pills timely.
Weight Gain
You may have heard the stories of women who gained weight after starting birth control pills. Although it has not been proven through research yet, some women have gained water weight because of these pills. Some have an increased muscle mass now. On the other hand, there are cases of women losing weight because of it.
Migraine
One of the worst risks of birth control is migraine. Pills with estrogen increase migraine chances. These pills can also raise your blood pressure. Women with obesity and a family history of high blood pressure are more prone to this risk.
Can increase cholesterol
The birth control pills with progesterone can mess with the cholesterol level. It might boost your LDL (low-density lipoprotein) which is the ‘bad’ cholesterol. It can also lower your HDL (high-density lipid), the ‘good’ cholesterol. Thankfully in most cases, the changes aren’t that significant.
Possibility of Blood cots
Another risk is that you may develop blood clots in your leg veins. If the clots reach your lungs, they will pose a great risk to your life. The chances of blood clots are higher for smokers.
Heart Diseases
If you’re a smoker, have obesity, or have a family history of heart health issues, birth control pills can increase your chances of developing cardiovascular diseases. For women older than 35, this is even higher.
Mental Health
Birth control pills can affect your mental health as well. Mood swings are a common side-effect. But, in rare cases, some women have developed depression after taking contraceptives.
There are no clear-cut rules which explain which risks might show up in you. But if you want to lessen the risks of birth control pills, giving up smoking can be a great help. Exercising and eating healthy can help as well.
